Free webinars focus on care for returning vets

A series of free webinars starting Nov. 12 will offer advice for health care professionals on understanding and caring for returning veterans.

A joint project of and the University of Phoenix, the online lectures will start at 7 p.m. and last one hour. They will span four days, ending Nov. 15, and cover the following topics:

Military culture

Challenges for female veterans

Difficulties returning to civilian life

Post-traumatic stress disorder

Jennifer Chaikin, executive director of Educational Initiatives for Gannett Healthcare Group, said the courses will help fill a gap in most medical training.

"In hospital systems they teach cultural awareness," said Chaikin, who worked as a nurse for 17 years. "One of the cultures that we don't talk about in health care is military."
