An annual military medical conference is an early victim of the Pentagon's budget problems.

Defense Department officials announced Friday that a four-day Military Health System conference expected to draw up to 3,000 people to a conference center in National Harbor, Md., has been canceled.

"This conference is an important element in bringing together the uniformed medical leadership at all levels of the Military Health System, along with our other federal partners and contractors," defense health officials said in a statement. "We are disappointed that we needed to take this step."

The statement cited uncertainty hanging over defense budgets for 2013 as the reason for the decision, saying it is one of "a series of near-term financial decisions to reduce overall spending in the department."

The meeting, which was going to be held at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center, involves several days of workshops covering medical and health care administration issues. The cancellation notice says they will try to provide some of that information by other means.

"We will be taking advantage of other means of communication to ensure all of you remain informed about our initiatives to create an even more integrated delivery system," the statement says.
