The Navy fired the commanding officer of a drydocked attack submarine on Friday "due to a loss of confidence in executing his duties as the submarine's commanding officer," Submarine Group 2 said in a statement.

Cmdr. Luis Molina, who had been in charge during the sub's overhaul in the shipyards, was relieved by Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge, the SUBGRU 2 commander.

"I have lost confidence in Cmdr. Molina's ability to effectively lead USS Pasadena through its maintenance overhaul," Breckenridge said in the statement.

The circumstances that led to the loss of confidence remain unclear.

Molina is the second sub CO fired this year.

Cmdr. Mark Cooper has taken charge of the Pasadena, which journeyed from Pearl Harbor to Maine in 2011 for an 18-month overhaul at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where its sonar, fire control and sensors are being upgraded.

"The crew is eagerly anticipating completing the overhaul and returning as a front line operational asset of the Pacific Fleet," Molina said last July, according to a Navy newsstand story. "The relocation will occur at the conclusion of our modernization next spring."
