CINCINNATI — U.S. House Speaker John Boehner says he wants a coherent plan from the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs on VA efforts to reduce the growing backlog of veterans' disability claims.
Boehner on Tuesday sent his second letter in a little over a month to VA Secretary Eric Shinseki. The speaker wasn't satisfied with Shinseki's response to his first letter. He said in a separate statement Tuesday that he hasn't seen any evidence a new computer system has led to any improvements or will eliminate the backlog.
Boehner wants Shinseki to quickly provide specific benchmarks, deadlines and progress measurements on how the VA is addressing the problems.
The speaker says he wants Shinseki's response within 30 days.
A message seeking comment was left at the VA Tuesday.
