Female MTI faces court-martial at Lackland

The first female military training instructor named in an ongoing sexual misconduct scandal at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland will face a special court-martial May 1.

Staff Sgt. Emily Allen is charged with having an unprofessional relationship. No information was available about the nature of the charges. If convicted at a special court-martial, she faces up to a year in confinement and a bad-conduct discharge.

On April 11, Staff Sgt. John W. Gerbick Jr. became the 14th MTI convicted in the scandal that began in the summer of 2011. Gerbick was found guilty of having unprofessional relationships with two technical training students, adultery and making a false official statement.

Military judge Col. Donald Eller sentenced Gerbick to 45 days confinement. Following his release, he will be restricted to base for 30 days of hard labor. He was also reduced to airman first class and ordered to forfeit $600 in pay.

During the week of Gerbick’s trial, two other MTIs faced Article 32, or preliminary, hearings. Senior Airman Christopher L. Oliver is accused of having sex with two female basic trainees and asking a third to show him a tattoo below the woman’s beltline, said Brent Boller, a Lackland spokesman. Oliver faces charges of sexual assault, sodomy, adultery, having an unprofessional relationship with a technical trainee, maltreatment and obstruction of justice.

Tech. Sgt. Marc Gayden is charged with rape and sodomy of a female basic military training student.

An investigating officer will next recommend whether there is enough evidence to send Oliver and Gayden to trial.

Oliver helped train a flight of recruits alongside ex-Staff Sgt. Luis Walker, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for raping, sexually assaulting and having forbidden relationships with 10 trainees. His case kicked off a sweeping investigation into basic military training that has now led to charges against at least 22 MTIs.
