Cruiser Chosin departs Hawaii for western Pacific

JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, HAWAII — The guided-missile cruiser Chosin is deploying from Hawaii to the western Pacific Ocean.

The Navy said Chosin will provide deterrence and humanitarian assistance while deployed. The ship is scheduled to leave Pearl Harbor on Tuesday.

Chosin is named in commemoration of the First Marine Divisionís heroism at the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War.

Chosin is equipped to combat threats from under water, from the air and from other surface ships. Itís capable of operating in support of carrier strike groups, amphibious forces or of operating independently.
