A Marine and a Navy corpsman will both receive the military’s third-highest award for valor this week in separate ceremonies.

Hospital Corpsman 1st Class (FMF) Benny Flores, who repeatedly braved enemy small-arms fire to treat wounded Marines and an Afghan police officer, will be honored with a Silver Star on Friday in a ceremony at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Flores was riding in I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) convoy in Nimruz province’s Zaranj district on April 28, 2012, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. Flores, of Guam, suffered shrapnel wounds in the blast but immediately began assisting wounded Marines, according to his award citation.

He helped one wounded Marine find cover, then re-entered the fray three times: Once treating a wounded Afghan police officer, again to apply a tourniquet to a wounded Marine who was carried to safety, and a third time to treat another wounded Marine — all before allowing anyone to care for his own wounds.

On Saturday Cpl. Christian Brown, with Wounded Warrior Battalion East, will receive his Silver Star aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C.

While deployed to Afghanistan as a squad leader with 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 8, in December 2011, Brown successfully performed a high-risk medical evacuation while under intense enemy fire.

Brown sprang into action when a designated marksman was critically wounded in the head, radioing in a medevac and leading his squad to a location where it was safe for the helicopter to land. He personally carried the wounded Marine the final 300 meters to the landing zone while taking heavy enemy fire, according to his citation.
