First female MTI convicted in sex scandal at basic

A military judge this afternoon sentenced the first woman convicted in a basic training sex scandal to three months in jail but spared her a bad-conduct discharge.

Staff Sgt. Emily Allen, a former military training instructor at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, pleaded guilty Wednesday to having unprofessional relationships with four technical trainees. In addition to three months in jail, Col. Donald Eller Jr. sentenced Allen to 30 days of hard labor and reduction to airman first class.

Allen had sex with a male technical trainee and partied with two female technical trainees, all of whom stayed at her home during the weekend of July 4, 2011, said Brent Boller, a Lackland spokesman. She also attempted to have a sexual relationship with a second technical trainee in summer 2011.

MTIs are forbidden to have contact with trainees even after they have graduated from basic and moved onto technical training.

Prior to sentencing, Allen gave an emotional unsworn statement in which she asked Eller to allow her to remain in the Air Force, Boller said. She apologized to the judge, her squadron and her friends and family, and said she had only herself to blame for her actions.

Allen said she had struggled with self-confidence and trust and had lost her way, Boller said. A bad-conduct discharge would leave her unable to provide for her young daughter, she told the judge.

Prosecutors asked for six months in jail and a bad-conduct discharge, Boller said. Eller deliberated for two hours before pronouncing his sentence.

Allen was the 19th MTI to be court-martialed and the only woman implicated in a scandal that has ensnared at least 32 former trainees in less than two years. All but one of the trials has ended in a conviction. Six of the former MTIs were sentenced to bad-conduct or dishonorable discharges.
