Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev., an Army Reserve officer, has been selected for promotion to brigadier general, one of the rare circumstances in which a member of Congress would be a reserve component general or flag officer.

Heck’s promotion is subject to Senate confirmation, just like any other promotion. Unless someone recognizes the name, the Senate Armed Services Committee would not even know that Heck is a sitting member of Congress. He appears on the promotion list as Army Reserve Col. Joseph J. Heck, with no mention that he is a member of Congress with a seat on the House Armed Services Committee.

As of May 9, Heck’s nomination had not been received by the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and approving nominations for promotion.

It is rare but not unprecedented for a sitting member of Congress or member of the congressional staff to have his or her nomination for promotion considered by the armed services committee, according to committee aides who asked not to be identified.

Heck is an Iraq veteran and former emergency room physician who serves as a medical adviser for the office of the chief of the Army Reserve. Along with his promotion to one-star, Heck is nominated to become deputy commander of the troop program unit at the Atlanta-based 3rd Medical Command.
