SELMA, ALA. — A Selma police officer suspected of killing two people before turning the gun on himself was a sergeant with the Alabama National Guard at the time of his death.
Guard officials say Dwight Moorer Jr. enlisted in 2003 and served two tours in Iraq, one from 2006 to 2007 and another in 2011.
He remained in the Guard as a sergeant.
A prosecutor has said he believes stress linked in part to Moorer’s military service was behind the shootings.
Authorities say Moorer killed a former girlfriend and her stepfather before shooting himself in a Selma neighborhood Sunday.
Moorer was off duty at the time of the slayings. He had been with the Selma Police Department about five years.
State police are investigating.
