GROTON, Conn. — Rep. Joe Courtney says he will lobby Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to reduce the number of furlough days and pay cuts at the Naval submarine base in Groton.
The Day of New London reports that the Democratic congressman met Wednesday with workers who say they’re worried. The furloughs, the result of automatic budget cuts that took effect in March, are set to begin Monday.
About 1,300 Defense Department civilian employees work at the Groton base and 750 will be forced to take unpaid days off for the next couple of months.
Some workers perform maintenance, support and administrative duties while others help run the child care, housing and recreation programs.
State Rep. Elissa Wright also attended and said she’s concerned about the impact on southeastern Connecticut’s economy.
