FORT CAMPBELL, KY. — The Army says a Fort Campbell-based soldier died in Afghanistan after being wounded when a rocket propelled grenade struck his vehicle.
Staff Sgt. Sonny C. Zimmerman, 25, of Waynesfield, Ohio, died July 16, in Mushaka, Afghanistan.
Zimmerman was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, Fort Campbell, Ky. He joined the Army in 2005.
Among his honors, Zimmerman was awarded a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantry Badge and an Air Assault Badge.
