FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — The Army’s top general at Fort Stewart has been nominated for a promotion to senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

The Defense Department announced Friday that Maj. Gen. Robert Abrams has been chosen for the Washington position by President Barack Obama. With the promotion, Abrams would rise to the rank of lieutenant general and add a third star to his uniform.

Abrams has been commander of Fort Stewart in southeast Georgia and the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division since April 2011. He recently returned from a deployment to Afghanistan, where Abrams was in charge of international forces in Kandahar and three other southern provinces.

Abrams is scheduled to turn over command of the 3rd Infantry at Fort Stewart next week to his successor, Maj. Gen. John Murray.
