MILL CITY, ORE. — Friends and family of a soldier wounded in Afghanistan held a candlelight vigil Thursday on the Santiam High School football field.

Nick Welch is a 2005 graduate of the Mill City school and a football player.

The Statesman Journal reports that he was critically injured Tuesday when a suicide bomber rode up to his unit on a donkey and detonated a bomb.

Three other soldiers from the Fort Stewart, Ga.-based unit were killed in the attack.
