HONOLULU — A Honolulu skydiver who died after losing consciousness while jumping from a plane was a decorated Army veteran.
Hawaii News Now reported Friday that 30-year-old Capt. Martin Monahan had been assigned to Schofield Barracks since 2010.
Monahan was practicing a maneuver when he attempted to jump over Dillingham Airfield on Tuesday.
Authorities say he lost consciousness and was unable to deploy his parachute. He died from his injuries the next day.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman says Monahan had struck a horizontal stabilizer at the back of Skydive Hawaii’s Cessna Caravan aircraft shortly after the jump.
Monahan had served three tours in Afghanistan and twice received the bronze star.
