NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. — The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor has held a Purple Heart ceremony for an Iraq veteran from New York who was wounded a decade ago.
Sunday’s ceremony at the New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site was held for Lt. Col. Mark Baaden, an Army reservist from Hopewell Junction in Dutchess County.
Officials at the Purple Heart Hall say Baaden suffered a traumatic head wound in Iraq in 2003. Recent changes to military regulations regarding such wounds made him eligible to receive the medal.
Baaden was awarded the Purple Heart during a ceremony at the Hall of Honor.
Wednesday marks the 231st anniversary of Gen. George Washington’s creation of the medal that would later be known as the Purple Heart.
