The commanding officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 106 has been fired due to an alleged affair with a female Navy civilian.

Cmdr. Edward White was relieved Monday as CO of the “Gladiators,” based out of Naval Air Station Oceana, Va., the service announced Monday.

The Navy cited a “loss of confidence in his ability to command following the preliminary findings of an ongoing command investigation into an alleged inappropriate relationship with a female Department of the Navy civilian employee.”

The employee was not within White’s chain of command, said Lt. Cmdr. Mike Kafka, spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic.

Rear Adm. Michael Shoemaker, head of AIRLANT, made the decision to fire the CO.

White, who is married with two children, has commanded VFA-106 since June 2012. He is a 1991 Naval Academy grad. He previously served as CO of VFA-34, the “Blue Blasters“ and in 2010 took a role on the staff in the office of the chief of naval operations.

Pending the results of the investigation, he has been temporarily assigned to Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic.

Edward did not immediately reply to emails and phone messages seeking comment.

Cmdr. Brent Blackmer has replaced White as commander of the Gladiators.

“Blackmer was originally scheduled to take command of the squadron on Sept. 26, in a regularly scheduled change of command,” the Navy said in a news release.

Blackmer previously commanded the “Ragin’ Bulls” of VFA-37. His most recent assignment was at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I.

VFA-106 is the East Coast-based fleet replacement squadron tasked with training Navy and Marine Corps F/A-18 replacement pilots and weapons systems operators, according to the news release. The squadron is composed of 1,200 enlisted and officer Navy and Marine Corps personnel.
