NEWPORT NEWS, VA. — The Theodore Roosevelt is preparing to rejoin the Navy fleet after a refueling and overhaul at a Virginia shipyard.
The Navy said the aircraft carrier departed the Huntington Ingalls’ Newport News Shipbuilding on Sunday.
The Nimitz class aircraft carrier has been in Newport News for the overhaul work since 2009.
A carrier undergoes the 41-month maintenance project once in its 50-year life. The Roosevelt was placed into active service in October 1986.
Capt. Daniel Grieco took command of the aircraft carrier in February. He relieved Capt. William Hart.
