More than 750 Colorado National Guard soldiers and airmen had mobilized as of Sept. 19 to assist local authorities dealing with historic levels of flooding in the state.

At least nine people had lost their lives in the flooding, according to news reports. Guard members and high-mobility vehicles and helicopters are assigned to assist in search-and-rescue and deliver supplies, among other missions.

Additionally, the Guard began providing traffic control points in and around the affected area Sept. 13. And the Federal Emergency Management Agency began staging its operations out of Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora Sept. 14 after Gov. John Hickenlooper declared a national emergency and President Obama approved federal support. FEMA representatives at Buckley orchestrated the shipment of more than 60,000 liters of water and 55,000 meals over three days. Soldiers and airmen are also assigned to the Windsor Readiness Center, and the Boulder, Fort Collins, and Denver armories.
