SALT LAKE CITY — A former Army ranger is trying to raise money to send shipping containers to Afghanistan with all the equipment needed to make a line of durable sports sandals.
Matthew Griffin is using the online crowdfunding website Indiegogo in an effort to raise $500,000 to expand production.
Griffin has used the Outdoor Retailer shows in Salt Lake City to promote his micro-manufacturing business Combat Flip Flops.
He tried commissioning an Afghanistan factory to make his sandals, but a lack of U.S. funding abruptly shut the factory down. Then he re-engineered the business to stuff everything he needed to make sandals in a 40-foot shipping container and send it anywhere.
Griffin and his partners have tested the concept in Issaquah, Wash., with a first-production run of 3,000 pairs.
