Navy launches weekly sexual assault report

The Navy’s Chief of Information on Friday released a summary of recent sexual assault statistics from around the fleet — the first of what will become a weekly report aimed at bringing more transparency to the problem.

“These weekly snapshots reinforce our goals to foster a command climate which: seeks to prevent and deter sexual assaults; encourages unrestricted reporting when these crimes occur; provides support to victims; and, holds offenders appropriately accountable,” wrote Rear Adm. John Kirby, the Navy’s chief of information, in a blog post.

The overview, which spans Oct. 13-20, cites 21 reports of sexual assault. The incidents did not necessarily occur this week. Rather, that is when they were reported.

“Every one of these reports will be fully investigated,” a Navy news release states.

Some of the key points in the Navy’s first overview:

■ 11 of the reported assaults occurred on-base, seven off-base, and three from unknown locations.

■ 18 alleged offenders were male, two were female, and one was unknown. The vast majority were known to their alleged victims. One was an officer, nine were petty officers, five were E-3 or below, and six were unknown.

■ 11 incidents are reportedly “service member on service member” assaults.

■ Among these alleged victims, one was an officer, six were petty officers, ten were E-3 and below, and four were civilians. Of these reported, 18 were female and three were male.

These weekly sexual assault reports follow the Navy’s recent decision to start publishing courts-martial results on a monthly basis on its official homepage.
