VA offers dental insurance to vets, some family members

The Veterans Affairs Department is now offering dental insurance to veterans enrolled in VA health care and to some family members of vets.

VA announced Friday the launch of a three-year pilot program, available to 8 million veterans and 400,000 civilians who receive care under the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Veterans Affairs Department, or CHAMPVA.

Veterans can choose from plans offered by Delta Dental — the company that manages the Tricare Retiree Dental Program — or MetLife, the insurer behind the Tricare Dental Program for active-duty families.

“This new dental program is another example of VA creating partnerships with the private sector to deliver a range of high-quality care at an affordable cost, for our nation’s veterans,” VA Secretary Eric Shinseki said.

Some veterans already are eligible for dental care at VA. Those former service members can purchase additional coverage through one of the companies but their basic dental services through VA will not change.

Veterans without any dental coverage can choose from several plans. Premiums will range from $8.65 to $52.90 per month, according to figures provided by VA; co-payments and cost-shares may apply.

More information on the VA Dental Insurance Program is available on VA’s website, including links to Delta Dental and MetLife.
