BELTON, TEXAS — A Central Texas jury has fined a Fort Hood soldier convicted of a misdemeanor in a case fought on his behalf by gun-rights advocates protesting his arrest.

The Temple Daily Telegram reports that the Belton jury that convicted U.S. Army Master Sgt. Christopher Grisham did not sentence him Tuesday to jail time. Grisham was fined $2,000.

Grisham has said he will appeal his conviction and sentence for interference with the duties of an officer.

He was arrested in March while hiking with his 15-year-old son. A police officer was called after someone saw Grisham carrying an assault rifle, which hes legally allowed to do under state law. Grisham was arrested after a confrontation caught on video.

His first trial earlier this year ended with a deadlocked jury.
