101st soldiers return from Afghanistan deployment

FORT CAMPBELL, KY. — The first snow of the season brought a touch of white to Fort Campbell as 512 soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) returned to the military post after a six-month deployment in Afghanistan.

The soldiers were among the last of the Currahees to return to the sprawling military post on the Kentucky-Tennessee state line. Family members waited in the cold to greet the soldiers on Monday, just days before Thanksgiving.

Capt. Samuel Albahari’s wife of two-and-a-half years, Sherelle Albahari, was shocked to see her husband again.

“It’s not really real right now,” she said. “It still hasn’t set in. He’s still my imaginary online husband.”

The Albaharis, who live in Clarksville, Tenn., said they didn’t have plans to go anywhere for the holiday.

“We’re going to spend it at our house,” Sherelle Albahari said. “A 24-pound turkey is waiting.”

Sgt. Zach Smith held his eight-month-old daughter, Emma, for the first time in months.

Decked out in her red, white and blue tutu and headband, she was a little more interested in the commotion of what was happening on the floor.

After his second deployment, “It’s pretty good to be home,” Smith said.

The 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division is one of 10 brigade combat teams that the Army will shut down between now and 2015.

The inactivation of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, which became famous as the “Band of Brothers” in a book by historian Stephen Ambrose and a subsequent HBO miniseries produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, is set to take place in the spring, but no official date has been set.
