The Air Force on Thursday named Maj. Gen. Jack Weinstein permanent commander of 20th Air Force, in charge of the service’s nuclear missile fleet.

Weinstein, former vice commander, had been interim commander since Oct. 11, when his predecessor, Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, was relieved of command for “personal misbehavior” during a temporary duty assignment last summer, Air Force spokesman Brig. Gen. Les Kodlick said at the time.

Kodlick declined to give reporters details of Carey’s misbehavior but he did say the incident did not involve sexual misconduct, drugs or gambling; however, Kodlick did not rule out alcohol as a factor.

A month after Carey was fired, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh said the Air Force was introducing new pre-screening procedures for two- and three-star general officers nominated for positions in the nuclear enterprise and all four-star positions.

The new procedures, which include a Google search of nominees, do not indicate the Air Force feels Carey should have been vetted more closely before taking command of 20th Air Force, Welsh told reporters at a Nov. 13 roundtable.

“This had nothing to do with General Carey,” Welsh said. “General Carey was relieved for something that General Carey would tell you was an embarrassing period of behavior while he was on a TDY.”
