A seaman apprentice bound for the amphibious dock landing ship Carter Hall died Monday from injuries suffered in a car crash while on leave, according to a Wednesday Navy release.

Electrician’s Mate Seaman Apprentice Omar Mohamed, 29, was on leave in Burlingtown, N.C., his home of record, at the time of the wreck, Expeditionary Strike Group 2 spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Candice Tresch told Navy Times. No further details on the fatal crash were available.

Mohamed had recently completed electrician’s mate “A” school but had not yet reported to his first afloat command in Norfolk, Va.

He enlisted in Oct. 2012 and earned a 98.38 grade point average in basic training, Tresch said.

“According to [Cmdr. Kertreck Brooks,] the executive officer at Recruit Training in Great Lakes, he was an excellent sailor and was the third top graduate in his class,” Tresch said.

Mohamed was originally from Tanzania, where his family still lives. Tresch confirmed that his family had been informed of Mohamed’s death at the time of the release.
