'Vending machine strategies' among Navy safety goals for 2014

With just a few hours to spare, the Navy’s Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions program released its schedule of awareness efforts for 2014 — a month-by-month breakdown of trouble spots the group intends to address.

CSADD, which formed in 2008 and has more than 300 chapters and sub-chapters, is a voluntary program targeting sailors E-5 and below who are under age 25, but is open to anyone.

The chapters “bring the awareness piece,” said Fleet Master Chief (AW/SW) April Beldo, fleet master chief of manpower, personnel, training and education, in a Tuesday news release announcing the schedule. “They’re in their commands having conversations about these topics and aren’t afraid to have these conversations with not just their peers, but everyone in the command.”

The list:

January: Planning a family during your career/Fleet and Family Support Centers, including career counseling and financial management tips.

February: Responsible use of alcohol.

March: Nutrition, including “vending machine strategies,” per NAVADMIN 335/13.

April: Sexual assault prevention and awareness.

May: Physical fitness.

June: Motorcycle safety.

July: Off-duty recreation, including “grilling safety tips.”

August: CSADD volunteer outreach.

September: Suicide awareness, including the Navy’s ACT (Ask, Care, Treat) program.

October: Domestic violence prevention and awareness, along with drug abuse prevention and awareness.

November: “Sailor resiliency,” including stress management.

December: Safe driving.

The breakdown is similar to last year’s — many of the months are identical, with others combining the efforts under slightly different topic headers or shuffling them around the calendar. Last year’s motorcycle safety efforts targeted spring riders in March, for example, while 2014’s bike month moves to the summer.
