Officials at Fort Hood, Texas, are investigating the death of a soldier who died Monday from an apparent gunshot wound.
Sgt. 1st Class Robert Floyd Vedder Jr., 38, died in his off-post residence in Killeen, Texas, according to information released Wednesday by Fort Hood.
Vedder, whose home of record is listed as Schenectady, N.Y., entered active duty service in September 1993 as a signal support systems specialist.
He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, at Fort Hood, since December 2011.
Vedder deployed to Iraq three times — in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, five Army Commendation Medals, nine Army Achievement Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, the Iraq Campaign Medal with campaign stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and five Overseas Service Ribbons.
