ANNAPOLIS, MD. — In the aftermath of the death of a freshman football player at the U.S. Naval Academy, another Midshipman died Saturday from injuries sustained the previous weekend in a skateboarding accident.

Sophomore Hans Loewen, 20, of Hampstead, N.C., died at Baltimore Shock Trauma, according to the academy's Facebook page.

"Hans was a vibrant Midshipman who lived his life to the fullest, and that spirit will be forever imprinted on his classmates and the Naval Academy," Vice Adm. Michael Miller, superintendent of the academy, said in the announcement.

Loewen was injured a week ago Saturday at the Assateague Island National Seashore, a national park on a barrier island off the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. He was on a camping trip during a weekend break away from the academy.

That same Saturday, football slotback Will McKamey, 19, of Knoxville, Tenn., collapsed on the practice field during spring drills at Navy. He died Tuesday at Baltimore Shock Trauma after undergoing surgery for swelling and bleeding on the brain. His funeral will be Monday in Knoxville.

On the website CaringBridge, Loewen's family said he sustained skull, facial and jaw fractures and internal cranial bleeding. The family said Loewen was skateboarding (in a helmet) when he fell and was run over by a rear wheel of a slow moving vehicle.

Loewen, an adventure sports enthusiast, was a member of the Adventure Racing Team and the Rock Climbing Club at Navy.
