Family of veteran killed by Lodi police files suit

LODI, CALIF. — The family of an Army veteran shot and killed by Lodi officers has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city and police department.

The Sacramento Bee says the suit filed Thursday on behalf of the family of Parminder Singh Shergill includes statements from 17 people who witnessed some of the January confrontation.

Attorney Mark Merin says the statements contradict a police account.

The department has released a general explanation saying that the officers had no choice but to kill Shergill after he charged them with a knife. Witnesses say Shergill did not have a knife in his hand and was not threatening.

The confrontation happened after Shergill’s mother called police after he abruptly left the house while in a bad mental state, according to relatives.

Police officials did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.
