Military officials are investigating after a Marine gate guard killed a Marine colleague with his M4 service rifle Tuesday evening aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The incident is not being considered an act of terrorism or an active-shooter scenario like last week’s deadly rampage at Fort Hood, Texas , officials said.

It’s unclear how many times the Marine was shot, said Nat Fahy, a spokesman for Camp Lejeune. Fahy said the Marine died despite attempts to revive him by base Provost Marshal officials, who were first on the scene.

The incident took place around 5:30 p.m. at the Camp Lejeune main gate, according to an official news release.

The identity of the slain Marine is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, officials said.

Marine officials did not immediately have information about the Marine suspected in the shooting or whether charges had been filed.

Officials with Naval Criminal Investigative Service were investigating the incident, officials said.

Fahy said base residents were notified about the shooting on Facebook, but the base was not placed in lockdown.
