The Air Force plans to cut the special duty pay for military training instructors, according to a chart posted on an internal Defense Department website and obtained by Air Force Times.

Air Force spokesman Maj. Matt Hasson said no decision had been made on the special pay reduction and that the chart should not have been posted. Air Force Times first tried to confirm the changes May 5; the Air Force responded May 10 after Air Force Times obtained the chart.

According to the chart, dated May 1, line MTIs’ special pay would be reduced from $450 a month to $300 a month. Other MTIs in support roles, including academic instructors, would have their special pay cut from $375 to $225 a month.

The special pay reductions would come 10 months after the Air Force announced that developmental special duties — including MTIs — would no longer be volunteer jobs. Instead, the Air Force began having commanders nominate airmen for special duties, which would be mandatory for those who are selected.

Other jobs that airmen are now nominated for include career assistance advisers, military training leaders, noncommissioned officer Air Force Academy military trainers, Airmen and Family Readiness Center NCOs, first sergeants, NCO honor guard members, recruiters, professional military education instructors and specialty training instructors identified with a “T” prefix.
