ALBANY, N.Y. — A member of a New York Air National Guard unit based on Long Island has been awarded a medal for bravery in Afghanistan for the second time in six months.
National Guard officials say Staff Sgt. Matthew Zimmer of Westhampton Beach received the Bronze Star with Valor during a ceremony held earlier this month at the Air National Guard base on Long Island that’s home to the 106th Rescue Wing.
Zimmer was part of a four-member Air Force rescue team that saved the life of a Marine who had been seriously injured by a roadside bomb in February 2012.
In December 2013, Zimmer received the same medal for heroism for a rescue mission in Afghanistan a year earlier. He was among six members of the 106th honored for rescuing wounded American soldiers.
