CAPE MAY, N.J. (AP) — After many hours of urging, a Coast Guard member has climbed down from a water tower at the agency’s training center in Cape May.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman says the active guard member climbed up the 165-foot tower before noon Thursday and didn’t come down until around 2 a.m. Friday.

Spokeswoman Lt. Kate McHenry says negotiators from the Cape May County prosecutors office worked with him for 14 hours before firefighters assisted him in coming down with a harness.

The Coast Guard would not comment on his possible motives or release his name.

During the wait, officials say that a Coast Guard helicopter flew over the tower to check on whether he has tired and to look for any hazards.

The base has about 2,000 personnel including active members and recruits going through an eight-week training program.
