The top general at Forces Command has been nominated to be the next Army Vice Chief of Staff, according to information on the Senate Armed Services Committee website.

If confirmed, Gen. Daniel Allyn will succeed Gen. John Campbell as the Army’s No. 2 officer.

Campbell has been nominated to lead the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. His confirmation hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

FORSCOM is the Army’s largest command, responsible for preparing and providing trained and ready troops to support combatant commanders around the world. Allyn has commanded FORSCOM since May 2013.

If confirmed as the next vice, Allyn would be responsible for managing the Army’s day-to-day operations during a time of critical transition. The Army is drawing down and reorganizing after more than 12 years of war amid tightening budgets.

A West Point graduate and infantry officer, Allyn commanded the XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

He also served in the 2nd Infantry Division, the 3rd ID, the 82nd Airborne Division and the 75th Ranger Regiment.

Allyn has deployed in support of Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada, the Sinai Peninsula, Operation Just Cause in Panama, Operation Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Also listed on the SASC website are nominations for Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, the commanding general of III Corps and Fort Hood, and Maj. Gen. Sean MacFarland, who commands the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss, Texas.

On the SASC site, Milley is recommended for the rank of general, while MacFarland is recommended for the rank of lieutenant general.

It’s possible that Milley could succeed Allyn at FORSCOM, while MacFarland would assume command at III Corps.

Army and Defense Department officials have not announced these latest nominations, which were referred to the SASC on Monday.

All three nominations must be confirmed by the Senate.
