WASHINGTON — Lawmakers will take a close look at military readiness and quality of life issues in a series of hearings this week, and Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin will make his first appearance before Congress in his new Cabinet post.

The House and Senate Armed Services committees will hold six hearings on force readiness issues over three days, including three on the military’s nuclear arsenal. Gen. Paul Selva, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Gen. John Hyten, head of U.S. Strategic Command, are among the military leaders who will testify on the challenges ahead.

Meanwhile, Shulkin will appear in an unusual evening hearing to discuss renewing the VA Choice Card program, set to run out of funding this summer. The timing comes as committee members return early from an extended weekend break for House lawmakers.

Gen. Joseph Votel, head of U.S. Central Command, and Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, head of U.S. Africa Command, will also appear on Capitol Hill this week, to discuss regional threats and challenges facing their areas of responsibility.
