MINNEAPOLIS — Funeral services are set for Gen. John Vessey Jr., a Minnesotan who was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under President Ronald Reagan.

A notice posted by Bradshaw funeral homes says Vessey's funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel at Fort Snelling. He'll be interred Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley.

Vessey died Thursday in North Oaks. He was 94.

Vessey enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 1939 when he was 17. He fought in World War II and Vietnam, and was America's top military officer when he retired to his home on Little Whitefish Lake near Garrison in 1985.

Gov. Mark Dayton has ordered flags flown at half-staff on the day of his interment.
