Editor's note: Military Times will spotlight a group of GI Film Festival selections regularly in the run-up to the festival.

The Category: Defying the Odds

The Films: "The Bravest, The Boldest," "Switchblade" and "We Can Do It"

The Breakdown: Trying times breed strength. Service members, their families and others on the home front are asked to rise to the occasion during crises, and how they do so can inspire others who've yet to face such life-altering obstacles.

  • "The Bravest, The Boldest" brings tragedy to the door of a soldier's mother in the form of casualty notification officers.
  • "Switchblade" tracks members of a Brazilian World War II battalion through a successful combat tour that surprised Allied leaders, and back home to anything but a hero's welcome.
  • "We Can Do It" spotlights the young women who joined the American industrial workforce during World War II, building the tools of combat that would lead to global victory, and taking pride in their service as real-life "Rosie the Riveters" for a lifetime.
