Editor's note: Military Times will spotlight a group of GI Film Festival selections regularly in the run-up to the festival.
The Category: Honor and Sacrifice
The Films: "The Colonel," "Doc," "Reinforcements" and "Stealing Valor"
The Breakdown: These four films explore the concept of the greater good, and how service members dedicate themselves in a variety of ways to support and shape that concept. Not all of their pursuits involve time in combat, or even in uniform.
- "The Colonel" sends a medically discharged Marine officer from his beloved Corps onto the sidelines of a struggling school's football team.
- "Doc" tracks a female medic in her quest to recover from war's trauma with help from her psychiatrist ... and a friendly dog given to her by a fellow veteran. The drama is written, produced and directed by a former Army combat medic.
- "Reinforcements" follows two real-life veterans who seek post-combat peace, beginning with a walk through Arlington Cemetery and continuing through a nationwide mission to spread the healing power of service dogs.
- "Stealing Valor" looks at the veterans who confront the military fakers among us, relying on databases and other tools to protect the legacy of those who've served.
