"It is a devastating event when we lose one of our team members," Navy Capt. Robert Mathewson, Fleet Activities Okinawa commander, said in the release. "It is with a heavy heart that I extend my sympathies to the parents of both Savannah and Gabriel. The contributions these two have made and their service to their country will not be forgotten."

Service members affected by the deaths are encouraged to seek support, according to the release.

"I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Savannah and Gabriel," Brig. Gen. Barry Cornish, 18th Wing commander, said in the release. "If you find yourself in need of help, don't hesitate to reach out to a friend, supervisor, chaplain or mental health professional. This is a trying time for our joint community, and it is important that we lean on each other and look after one another."
