1864: In the Battle of Marks' Mill, Arkansas, Confederate cavalry under Brig. Gens. James F. Fagan and J.O. Shelby swept down on a Union supply column commanded by Lt. Col. Francis Drake and after a five-hour fight captured it. Among the casualties were 150 black freedmen taken prisoner and possibly 100 others summarily massacred by the Confederates.
