1643: In his boldest and most brilliant victory, Louis II de Bourbon, duc d’Enghien (later Prince de Condé), destroys a Spanish army in the Battle of Rocroi.

1793: The Netherlands seizes the isle of St. Maarten from the French (which it will hold until 1795).

1919: Mustafa Kemal Pasha lands at Samsun on the Black Sea coast, starting the Turkish War of Independence. 

1941: The new German battleship Bismarck leaves Gdynia, Poland, preparatory to embarking on its first wartime sortie.
