Moving: Transportation
As soon as you have permanent change-of-station orders, make an appointment with your local transportation office. This is especially important for those stationed at large military installations or in locations such as Washington, D.C., with large numbers of service members. Peak times for PCS moves are the summer months, so expect appointment slots to fill up quickly.
Transportation office staffs know about the regulations and benefits that apply to your particular move.
When contacting the transportation office, you’ll need to provide:
å A choice of moving dates.
å Estimated date of arrival at the new duty station.
å A list of large or unusual items.
å Six copies of the PCS orders for stateside moves or 12 copies for moves overseas.
å A power of attorney or letter of authorization if you cannot make the moving arrangements.
å An interim phone number, such as a cell phone, where you can be reached if your property arrives at its destination early.
Upon arrival at the new duty station, contact the local transportation office to avoid late delivery or storage of goods. Make sure to carry a copy of all signed transportation orders with you.
