Tales from the Sandbox

Photographer Sheila Vemmer and reporter Andrew Scutro have recently returned from Iraq.
So many lines, so little power

One of the weirdest things I have seen here, and something that just fascinates me every time I see it, are the power lines criscrossing the streets. It is like contemporary art, or string art from the ’70s at the least. I love the randomness of it, but it scares me as well. Reminds me of life after Hurricane Ivan - dodging power lines everywhere. At least here you don’t have to worry so much about them being live.

One last one, a close-up:

On top of this craziness, the people here only get 30 minutes to two hours of power a day. Randomly. Wouldn’t it suck if your power came on when you were out?

Overheard yesterday in an Iraqi home:
“It smells like Cheetos in here, only I know it isn’t Cheetos. That is disturbing to me.”

You know how Jeff Foxworthy makes his redneck jokes. I wonder who would give out jokes equal to that there. Pretty amazing I say.

Yes i do have to agree they waste too many lines for not having enough power for the country it is really sad that these peoeple are so smart but still cannot build a decent power grid
