New Web Intelligence certificate program
Web analytics is the focus of a new certificate program by the University of California Irvine Extension.
“For the last few years, the rate of growth in online sales has made it impossible for employers to find trained, talented, educated people in the field of Web analytics,” said Jim Sterne, a member of the program’s advisory committee and chairman of the Web Analytics Association, in a prepared statement.
“In that respect, it’s a seller’s market as far as people with résumés go.”
The Web Intelligence program is intended to provide a “foundational knowledge of practical Web analysis,” according to a news release. It’s offered jointly with University of British Columbia Continuing Studies.
Security specialties online from Capella
Capella University’s new bachelor’s-level specializations in homeland security and security management start this month.
“Since the Department of Homeland Security was created in 2001, it has grown into one of the largest federal agencies,” said John Sullivan Jr., Capella’s undergraduate public safety faculty chair.
Private security, the focus of Capella’s security management specialization, has also risen in importance, Sullivan said. “Much of the nation’s infrastructure is privately owned, and there’s a growing recognition that this needs to be protected, for both business and national security reasons.”
The specializations are within Capella’s Bachelor of Science in Public Safety degree program.
Online law school merges with Kaplan
Los Angeles-based Concord Law School’s recent merger with Kaplan University means students of the first and only fully online law school in the U.S. now qualify for Title IV federal student loans for the first time.
Kaplan Higher Education Corp. owns both Kaplan University and Concord Law School — now Concord Law School of Kaplan University — which opened in 1998 and has awarded more than 600 juris doctorate and executive juris doctorate degrees since the first class graduated in 2002, according to the company.
Those who earn the juris doctorate are eligible to sit for the California Bar Examination but may not qualify to sit for the bar exam in other states. Students who pursue executive juris doctorates generally do so to earn the credential but don’t intend to sit for bar exams to become practicing attorneys.

Summer science program focuses on research
The deadline is Feb. 1 to apply for the Amgen Foundation’s Amgen Scholars Program, designed to give undergraduate science majors the chance to do hands-on research at one of 10 host universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The program allows students to “explore an area of research under a faculty mentor beyond what they may be able to do as part of their regular undergraduate education,” according to a news release.
A cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.2 is required.
