Officer professional military education: Navy

Like the other services, naval officers are required to complete professional military education at various times in their careers. There are multiple routes to completing the requirement, which is often based on a specific billet or job an officers is being sent to. Often, naval officers attend professional military education at either the Army or Air Force’s institutions as well.

The Navy itself offers two formal PME locations, The Naval War College in Newport, R.I. and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.

The Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Va. also gets its share of naval officers as well as does the National War College and Industrial College of the Armed Forces, which are part of the National Defense University at at Ft. McNair in Washington, D.C. Officer community managers and detailers at the Navy Personnel Command, located in Millington, Tenn., can assist officers in setting up their PME progression.
