Criticizing maintenance got airman ousted

I spent 20 years as an F-15 and A-10 crew chief, and the production supervisor and his expeditor obviously needed a refresher course in Leadership 101. One of the most important virtues of good leadership is to earn the loyalty and respect of your subordinates. The fact that this issue escalated to the point it had tells me the unit’s leadership failed miserably. If technical data has been breached, protocol is not important. Ruffling feathers is not important. Safety of flight is all that matters. Period.

I don’t want to fly an unsafe aircraft, and I thank the young NCO for making the fight.

Unpublished death photo of Ernie Pyle found

The photo should not have been published, at the time of his death, in deference to his wife and family. Publishing the photo now is appropriate. He was a beloved figure to all Americans as a result of his keeping the home front informed of life as it was lived by the American soldier in combat. No frills, no glory and no propaganda. Ernie Pyle depicted that life and earned the camaraderie of soldiers and the American people whose loved ones were the subjects of his reporting. His contribution to our nation should have earned him the civilian equivalent of the Medal of Honor. It is not too late to so honor him.

Lawmaker pushes lower military drinking age

I don’t get why military service has anything to do with one’s ability to consume alcohol. I don’t see the connection. The drinking age should be 18 because that is the age you are legally an adult, and we really shouldn’t make laws that restrict the freedom of adults. They merely have to follow the law and be legally liable for their actions, which they are anyway.

I don’t think going off to war makes a person more mature when it comes to drinking responsibly. The article asks why a soldier can’t have a beer regardless of age. Well, that’d be fine if he/she only had a beer, but I’ve seen people well over the legal age that aren’t mature enough to know when to stop, or how to behave when they are drunk. So lowering the drinking age will only increase the alcohol-related incidents (DUI, fighting in the clubs or the barracks, etc.). Lowering the legal drinking age is a horrible idea. They ought to raise it instead.

Which Air Force base is the best?

I have to say Misawa, Japan, is the best assignment I’ve had, hands down. A lot of rain and a lot of snow at times, but I had the best office of co-workers that got along, and the family atmosphere the base had was the best I’ve seen anywhere. I say it’s the Air Force’s best kept secret.
