european relations

Most Europeans really don’t like Americans at all. A large percentage of them despise Americans and everything America stands for.

I’ve been stationed in Europe for nine years now. They may not agree with everything we do, but they admire our ideals and agree with them for the most part.

A vast majority seem to like us unless we present the typical “ugly American” image. The only folks who had problems were the ones who had attitude and showed little respect for the host country. If you try to learn the language and local customs, they are usually flattered and respond well.

One on one, Europeans generally like Americans. It’s our policies they dislike.

TATTOOS

Tattoos can be very subjective, depending on the chief or commander. They will get you during PME because you can’t cover a tattoo with blues. Anything that shows through the uniform will make you a target. We have had several [senior airmen] not make it through PME because they couldn’t wear short sleeves. Both have since been separated because of HYT. Basic rule to follow is no tats below the elbows, knees or above the collar.

I went to [Airman Leadership School] two years ago. We had an individual with tattoos on both his calves. One of the tattoos bared a woman’s naked chest. He had to pull his socks up to his knees while we PT’d in shorts to cover the tattoos.

Other than in Hollywood movies, I’ve never seen an officer with a tattoo.
