FORT HOOD
I wouldn’t call it an excuse, but I can understand how being told to deploy to a place [about which] you only hear the worst, nightmarish stories from patients could break someone. If your mental health is already poor, it’d almost feel like a death sentence. Again, not excusing what he did. Just understanding how it could make someone snap.

This person [allegedly] was not able to deal with the basic demons every soldier deals with, on the cusp of combat, without resorting to [violence]. They are harassment, fear, isolation, apprehension, peer pressure and religious belief. He didn’t do well considering he was a student of mental health medicine.

Is anyone going to have the courage to examine the root causes of the stress that would lead one to do such a thing? GIs committing violence against each other and their family members while in garrison is a sign that we have some serious problems. … This is not about a lone gunman, this is not about radical Islam — this is a much bigger problem, rooted in domestic policy. ... Denial isn’t going to cut it anymore.

DINING SERVICES
I used to eat at the chow hall about seven times a week until my Basic Allowance for Subsistence kicked in. The chow hall is a waste of money. If my chow hall were demolished tomorrow, it wouldn’t affect me one bit. There should be an option for any airman to opt out of eating at the chow hall and get their BAS instead.

Chow halls provide a balanced meal, with fast-serve alternatives. I agree that the chow halls should be kept, and opened to all — enlisted, officer, government civilian and retirees.
