‘Underworld: Rise of the Lycans’

The third installment in this franchise is actually a prequel, going back hundreds of years before the events of the first two films to recount the origins of the bloody vampire-werewolf conflict.

No Kate Beckinsale this time, but Rhona Mitra is a fine fill-in as Sonja, warrior daughter to vampire lord Viktor (Bill Nighy). She’s having a fling with Lucien (Michael Sheen), leader of the werewolves, who is about to wage war on the bloodsuckers.

Nighy and Sheen heartily chew the scenery, the special effects are great and the battle scenes are campy fun. If you liked the first two “Underworld” films, you’ll want to see this one.
